Captain Frosty’s Fish & Chips, Dennis
Captain Frosty’s has been serving up award-winning fried seafood for over 40 years. The menu features an array of New England summer classics, from day-boat scallops to jumbo lobster rolls. But it’s the fried clams that have beachgoers queuing up after a day at the shore.
Captain Frosty’s fried clams are juicy but not greasy, the portions are plentiful and well-priced, and the atmosphere is flip-flop casual. The barn-shaped clam shack is part of a 1950s-era dairy bar (Mr. Frosty is the captain of soft-serve ice cream, too) and features indoor and outdoor seating. Located at 219 Main Street, Dennis, MA.
Baxter’s Boathouse Restaurant, Hyannis
Located on Hyannis Harbor, Baxter’s Boathouse has been firing up the Fryolator and serving some of the best New England seafood since 1967. Baxter’s is a Cape Cod institution, and it’s as famous for its baskets of fried clams as Marconi Beach is for its majestic sand dunes.
Not only has Baxter’s attracted celebrities, including the Kennedy clan who frequented the place every summer, but it’s the only waterfront restaurant in Hyannis where patrons can dock their boats and then head inside for a heaping portion of batter-crusted seafood. Located at 177 Pleasant St, Hyannis, MA.
Arnold’s Lobster & Clam Bar, Eastham
This Outer Cape seafood restaurant is a family favorite. And with high-quality seafood, reasonable prices, and on-site mini-golf, it’s easy to see why.
In the old days, Arnold’s was a small drive-in shack with a few picnic tables. They served their fried clams and oysters in humble paper cups. Today, Arnold’s is more of a restaurant complex than a clam shack, and it holds the distinction of being one of Cape Cod’s post popular eateries. Locals claim the fried clams and fish and chips are the best in the area. Located at 3580 US-6, Eastham, MA.
The Clam Shack, Falmouth
This Falmouth institution takes dining-in-the-rough to the next level. The Clam Shack shares dock space with the ferry boats bringing residents and vacationers to and from Martha’s Vineyard. In 2018, it looked liked the end of an era when longtime owner James Limberakis announced his retirement after nearly 60 years in business.
However, fried clam lovers continued to line up when the Clam Shack opened in 2019 under new management. James Murray, former owner of the Nimrod restaurant, took over this much-loved spot and didn’t change a thing. Located at 227 Clinton Avenue, Falmouth, MA.
Cobie’s Clam Shack, Brewster
Located on Route 6A, this small, window-only clam shack has been churning out delicious fried clams since 1948. What this local favorite lacks in white tablecloth fanciness, it makes up for with fresh-off-the-boat seafood.
Cobie’s fried clams are succulent and as briny as the ocean air, and pair perfectly with their golden onion rings and sides of tartar sauce. Be sure to save room for one of Cobie’s legendary milkshakes. Located at 3260 Main St, Brewster, MA.
