Where Is Weymouth Located?
Weymouth is a South Shore community located in Norfolk County, MA, which sits just south of Boston’s city limits. Weymouth is sandwiched between Braintree on the west and Hingham on the east.
Weymouth has a coast that follows the shoreline of what’s known as the Weymouth Fore River. This small estuary flows into Hingham Harbor.
Weymouth’s rather elongated shape divides the community into four districts or villages, each with its own center and geographic location.
North Weymouth borders the Weymouth Fore River. Parts of this district feature skyline views of Boston. Route 3A is the main corridor through North Weymouth.
South Weymouth sits mostly south of Route 3, which cuts across the district from east to west.
East Weymouth is located in between these two areas and includes Whitman’s Pond.
A fourth part of town is Weymouth Landing. This district sits at the headwaters of Weymouth Fore River.
What’s Weymouth Known For?
Weymouth is the second oldest township in Massachusetts. Its history dates to 1622 when it was founded as a small colony. By 1630 this colony was made part of the larger Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630. Once officially incorporated as a town in 1635, the community took its name from settlers who arrived across the pond from the English town of Weymouth.
Weymouth is the birthplace of Abigail Adams, the wife of President John Adams and the mother of President John Quincy Adams. The home where she was born and grew up still stands today. Restored and reopened in 2014, the saltbox-style home is open to the public for tours.
Weymouth Town Hall is a replica of the Old State House in Boston, a historic building that served as the seat of the Massachusetts colonial government and, after 1776, the seat of our state government.
Weymouth was a center for the shoemaking industry from the late 19th century into the 20th century.
