South Coast Music Venues

Marion Art Center, Marion Known locally as The Mac, the Marion Art Center is a venue for music, art, and theater productions. A restored 1830 Universalist Church on Main Street provides a home for this organization that includes a small theater, two galleries, an outdoor patio, and a studio workshop. Live music at The Mac feature local musicians who span genres from folk to classical.

The Narrows Center For The Arts, Fall River Founded in 1995, the Narrows supports local musicians and performing artists with its live performance space and is a well-known regional destination for the visual and performing arts.

Zeiterion Performing Arts Center, New Bedford Known to fans as The Z, the Zeiterion was born in 1923 as a vaudeville palace with marble columns, a gold-leaf frieze with Grecian dancing muses, and a cut-glass Czechoslovakian chandelier. Now restored to its former splendor, The Z hosts a wide range of musical acts from rock to classical. Comedy, dance, and theatre performances round out the programming at this premier performing arts center.

South Coast Theatre

Little Theatre of Fall River, Fall River One of the oldest theater companies in the country makes its home in Fall River. Founded in 1935 and totally run by volunteers, the Little Theatre of Fall River stages three mainstage shows annually, plus four or five shows each year at the Firebarn, a repurposed firehouse.

New Bedford Festival Theatre, New Bedford Musical theatre is the star at the New Bedford Festival Theatre, which has presented 26 summers of musical productions including classics and contemporary works. The Festival Theatre has earned national recognition for such productions as "Cabaret," "A Chorus Line," and "West Side Story."

Your Theatre, Inc., New Bedford This community theater group has been in continuous operation since 1946, enriching the local area with dramas and comedies drawn from the theatrical canon as well as works by local playwrights.

South Coast Museums and Historic Sites

 

Battleship Cove, Fall River Explore five National Historic Landmark U.S. Navy ships and other craft at Battleship Cove, home to the world's largest collection of preserved WWII naval vessels. The collection includes the USS Massachusetts and the USS Joseph P. Kennedy Jr.

Fort Phoenix State Reservation, Fairhaven See the remains of Fort Phoenix at this state reservation that also features a universally accessible beach. The fort saw action during the American Revolution and the War of 1812. Union troops staffed the fort during the Civil War. Today Fort Phoenix is used as a site for historical encampments and historical tours.

 

Local Tip: A visit to Battleship Cove requires a whole day to explore this amazing collection of World War II military ships and aircraft.

 

New Bedford Art Museum/ArtWorks!, New Bedford Located in New Bedford's Seaport Cultural District, NBAM merged with ArtWorks! to foster the arts through exhibitions and educational programs for all ages. The musuem is housed in a former bank where exhibits feature contemporary and historic art.

New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park, New Bedford Learn about New Bedford's whaling industry at this National Historical Park that honors New Bedford's role as the most important American whaling port during the 19th century. The park includes the New Bedford National Historic Landmark District, the New Bedford Whaling Museum, the Seamen's Bethel chapel, the schooner Ernestina, and the Rotch–Jones–Duff House and Garden Museum.
