Upper Cape Activities

Falmouth Beaches

A coastline along Buzzards Bay as well as Nantucket Bay gives Falmouth an extra serving of beaches. The Falmouth Beach Department manages no less than 10 beaches, giving Falmouth residents plenty of choices. Local Tip: Heritage Museums and Gardens opens during the holiday season with Gardens Aglow, a annual display of lights and garden displays ideal for family gatherings. The event begins the day after Thanksgiving and runs Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through December.

 

Mid-Cape Activities

HyArts Artist Shanties, Hyannis

Every summer Cape Cod artists open shanties along the boardwalk on Hyannis Harbor, providing a charming setting for a day of shopping and live music. Stroll along Hyannis Harbor and meet Cape Cod artists working and selling their art.

John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum

Housed in a Federal-style brick building graced with Corinthian columns, the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum focuses on President Kennedy's legacy, his family, and his love for Cape Cod.

 

Local Tip: Walk the self-guided Hyannis Kennedy Legacy Trail to explore downtown Hyannis sites connected to the Kennedy family. The 1.6-mile trail consists of 10 sites, including St. Francis Xavier Church where President Kennedy and his family attended Sunday Mass during the summer.

 

Lower Cape Activities

Nickerson State Park, Brewster

Hiking, fishing, biking, and swimming are among the activities visitors can enjoy at the 1,900-acre Nickerson State Park. The park is a favorite for family camping. Have you ever camped in a yurt? You can at Nickerson State Park.

Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge, Chatham

Monomoy Island is an 8-mile-long sandspit between Nantucket Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. This Cape Cod hidden gem is open for sport fishing, wildlife viewing, and nature photography. The refuge headquarters and visitor center is located on Morris Island.

 

Outer Cape Activities

Nauset Light, Eastham

Nauset Light is one of the most historic and iconic lighthouses on Cape Cod. Tours at Nauset Light are free to the public. Visitors can climb the lighthouse during seasonal hours. Nauset Light typically opens in early May.

Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, Wellfleet

This Massachusetts Audubon Society preserve in Wellfleet offers programs, classes, and activities for kids, teens, and adults. Youth programs include vacation week programs in February and April for children ages 5–11. Adult courses on everything from birding to kayaking provide an opportunity to learn in a 1,200-acre classroom of salt marshes, pine woodlands, and sandy beaches.

 

Local Tip: Cape Cod has long been known as an artists' colony, but you don't have to be a trained artist to take advantage of programs and courses at such centers as Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill and the Cultural Center of Cape Cod in Yarmouth. The Truro Center for the Arts, located on the Outer Cape, offers year-round classes in everything from drawing to ceramics to jewelry making. The Cultural Center of Cape Cod has educational programs that range from digital arts to culinary arts.
