Abington is a family-oriented town with an excellent school system and numerous recreational facilities for its citizens. It is considered a bedroom community for those commuting to Boston and other areas, and has only a small amount of industry within its borders.
The shoe-making business flourished in Abington until the Great Depression years when the town returned to its agricultural base. So many strawberry farms were located in Abington in the early 20th century that growers formed a cooperative and sold their fruit in Boston. Some of the community’s original dairies and nurseries are still operating.
Architectural styles of Abington homes range from small ranches to large Victorian and Colonial residences, such as those that line Route 58, one of the town’s main thoroughfares. The Plymouth-Kingston route of the MBTA’s commuter rail line runs through the eastern portion of Abington, with a train stop near the intersection of Route 123 and Route 58.
Among the many amenities available to local residents are Island Grove Pond and Park, the 607-acre Ames Nowell State Park, and Strawberry Valley Golf Course on Route 18.
Abington, which was incorporated as a town in 1712, borders Whitman, Holbrook, Weymouth, Rockland and Brockton.
